I came, I saw, I conquered
There's something about the Russian Girl Djs and especially Mari Ferrari is booked all over the world. Why this enthusiasm? Of course topless performances are attractive but it's even more than just an exotic show cause Mari knows how to operate as a real professional DJ with music as a kind of art. Mari exposes her philosophy about music, clubs, Moscow and female attraction. Interview by Dennis Rowehl.
Autona: Hi Mari, how are you?
Autona: Hi Mari, how are you?
Mari: Great, thanks!
Autona: You started your career as a DJ at the end of 2007. What was the specific reason for this profession?
Mari: The wave of the Moscow dens-movement has grasped me since 18 years. During that romantic period of a life I often visited clubs, was interested in a dance music, got acquainted with new people. Simultaneously I had an idea to represent myself as the dancer, but after some reflexions I made an unexpected decision – to become DJ. I do not hide that this decision has been accurately planned and thought over. Becoming a DJ, I could combine work with rest, profit and pleasure from a trade. Whether this happiness? Further on in the internet I have found the producer agency GIRLDJS (...) and in the end ... here I am!!!
Autona: You don't play premixed sound files, right?
Mari: Аааа … it is a rough imagination of ill-wishers and losers. Once upon a time there was a notorious article, that's why people asked me this questions many, many times ... but thank God authors of this article have already apologized and their firm is already closed, the author gradually finishes his career of the DJ in China. God grants them of health and happiness to their children.
Autona: So you and the Russian GirlDJs invented the combination between a topless show and dj-ing. How many percent of your show is the topless part. How important is this exotic touch for your success?
Mari: Last year almost all sets worked topless. In 2009 approximately 60 % of clubs and platforms have forgotten about topless and they don't ask at all. They need just good DJ with exclusive music. I am very glad about this.
Autona: You worked for EuroVision parties in Moscow, Fashion TV, appeared in the Maxim and Playboy Magazine and you perform world wide from Russia to the USA, especially Las Vegas seems to be a great place for you? Do you have an explanation for the hype?
Mari: When I translated the word “Hype” which you wrote in question, I was surprised, as it mean “to lie”!
Autona: No, that's not what I meant. I'm talking about the new-fashioned word „hype“, you know. Hype as a sensation!
Mari: Okay (smiling). By counting all this greatest labels I and my management GirlDJs are also showing materials, deals which we did with that labels: videos, magazines, photos, everything… I give great value to it since any occurrence on these platforms and in mass media. It is mega PR, for me it is a work which I carry out with the great pleasure. I love America and Europe and each performance is a great experience and the feedback is awesome. Every year I know people more and more, I get acquainted with their culture, a way of life and customs. It is very interesting and exciting.
Autona: If you compare Russian and American parties, where's the difference?
Mari: You know, it's a difference regarding the music style. In Russia all adore a commercial house and in USA R'n'B. And in the rest of Europe both. But regarding drinks it's almost the same. Well, I simply thought that only our Russian people drink vodka that much but vodka is popular everywhere. In some countries people even drink more than Russians (laughing).
Autona: I guess travelling is one of the best part of your job, isn't it? Do you like sight seeing?
Mari: Yes, I hope I'll be in Japan soon, just to see Tokio.
Autona: What will be the next step on your way?
Mari: Now we are working with Russian musicians and the sound producers TOM REASON to produce new professional clips with special computer graphics. I think in January 2010 we will start a rotation on Musical TV channels. I also have an offer to act in film, really! But at this time I'm too busy (smiling).
